    Reactive interface formation and Co-induced (√7×√7 ) superstructure on a GaN(0001) pseudo- (1×1 ) substrate surface

    Deposition of Co on GaN(0001) pseudo- (1×1) surface at room temperature by molecular-beam epitaxy is studied by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning-tunneling microscopy and first-principles total energy calculations. Reactive interface formation where the deposited Co reacts with Ga on GaN substrate forming CoGax (x∼2) compound or alloy can be inferred from surface morphology evolution and mass consideration. At an intermediate coverage about 0.4 monolayers, a specific (√7×√7) surface structural phase develops, as observed by both low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy studies. First-principles total energy calculations suggest that the (√7×√7) structure is induced by Co-trimers located slightly below the topmost Ga adlayer of the substrate. © 2010 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Hamiltonian simulation with optimal sample complexity

We investigate the sample complexity of Hamiltonian simulation: how many copies of an unknown quantum state are required to simulate a Hamiltonian encoded by the density matrix of that state? We show that the procedure proposed by Lloyd, Mohseni, and Rebentrost [Nat. Phys., 10(9):631-633, 2014] is optimal for this task. We further extend their method to the case of multiple input states, showing how to simulate any Hermitian polynomial of the states provided. As applications, we derive optimal algorithms for commutator simulation and orthogonality testing, and we give a protocol for creating a coherent superposition of pure states, when given sample access to those states. We also show that this sample-based Hamiltonian simulation can be used as the basis of a universal model of quantum computation that requires only partial swap operations and simple single-qubit states.S.K. and C.Y.L. are funded by the Department of Defense.     CO2geological sequestration modelling and injection induced fracturing analysis of the caprock

    In geological sequestration, CO2is injected under high pressure into deep underground rock formations, including deep saline aquifers. This paper presents the invading supercritical CO2-brine two-phase numerical model to describe CO2flow and transport processes in deep saline aquifers. The effects of anisotropy and different kinds of heterogeneity like horizontal and vertical layers and also existence of barriers between layers on the CO2flow and transport in a saturated porous media with brine are investigated using the presented two-phase model. Following to simulation results, it can be obtained that the permeability of the rock formations and the permeability anisotropy should be considered as the most important parameters in CO2flow and transport processes and its distribution in the rock formations. Furthermore, the capillary pressure on the buoyancy-driven flow of CO2is analyzed, and the XFEM is adopted to simulate the injection induced fracturing process of the naturally fractured caprock. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group

    Interleukin-2 Confers Cardioprotection by Inhibiting Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore

    In the present study, we determined whether interleukin-2 (IL-2) confers cardioprotection by inhibiting mitochondria permeability transition pore (MPTP) opening. In isolated rat hearts subject to 30 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion (IR), IL-2 (50 U/ml) decreased the infarct size and LDH release, effects blocked by a selective kappa-opioid receptor antagonist, Nor-BNI (5 microM) or an opener of MPTP, atractyloside (Atr, 20 microM). In isolated ventricular myocytes subjected to anoxia and reoxygenation (AR), which reduced both the amplitude of the electrically induced [Ca2+]i transient and diastolic [Ca2+]i, IL-2 attenuated the AR-induced alterations and their effects were abolished by Atr. In addition, IL-2 attenuated the reduction in calcein fluorescence in myocytes subject to AR and reduced calcium-induced swelling in mitochondria of rat hearts subjected to IR, which were similar to effect of inhibitor of MPTP.     Influence of interleukin-2 on Ca2+ handling in rat ventricular myocytes

    In the present study, we examined the effect of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on cardiomyocyte Ca2+ handling. The effects of steady-state and transient changes in stimulation frequency on the intracellular Ca2+ transient were investigated in isolated ventricular myocytes by spectrofluorometry. In the steady state (0.2 Hz) IL-2 (200 U/ml) decreased the amplitude of Ca2+ transients induced by electrical stimulation and caffeine. At 1.25 mM extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca 2+]o), when the stimulation frequency increased from 0.2 to 1.0 Hz, diastolic Ca2+ level and peak intracellular Ca 2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), as well as the amplitude of the transient, increased. The positive frequency relationships of the peak and amplitude of [Ca2+]i transients were blunted in the IL-2-treated myocytes. The effect of IL-2 on the electrically induced [Ca2+]i transient was not normalized by increasing [Ca2+]o to 2.5 mM. IL-2 inhibited the frequency relationship of caffeine-induced Ca2+ release. Blockade of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+-ATPase with thapsigargin resulted in a significant reduction of the amplitude-frequency relationship of the transient similar to that induced by IL-2. The restitutions were not different between control and IL-2 groups at 1.25 mM [Ca2+]o, which was slowed in IL-2-treated myocytes when [Ca2+]o was increased to 2.5 mM. There was no difference in the recirculation fraction (RF) between control and IL-2-treated myocytes at both 1.25 and 2.5 mM [Ca 2+]o. The effects of IL-2 on frequency relationship, restitution, and RF may be due to depressed SR functions and an increased Na+-Ca2+ exchange activity, but not to any change in L-type Ca2+ channels. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd.     Micron-sized atom traps made from magneto-optical thin films

    We have produced magnetic patterns suitable for trapping and manipulating neutral atoms on a 1μ1 \mum length scale. The required patterns are made in Co/Pt thin films on a silicon substrate, using the heat from a focussed laser beam to induce controlled domain reversal. In this way we draw lines and "paint" shaped areas of reversed magnetization with sub-micron resolution. These structures produce magnetic microtraps above the surface that are suitable for holding rubidium atoms with trap frequencies as high as ~1 MHz.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    A novel COL4A1 frameshift mutation in familial kidney disease: the importance of the C-terminal NC1 domain of type IV collagen

    BACKGROUND: Hereditary microscopic haematuria often segregates with mutations of COL4A3, COL4A4 or COL4A5 but in half of families a gene is not identified. We investigated a Cypriot family with autosomal dominant microscopic haematuria with renal failure and kidney cysts. METHODS: We used genome-wide linkage analysis, whole exome sequencing and cosegregation analyses. RESULTS: We identified a novel frameshift mutation, c.4611_4612insG:p.T1537fs, in exon 49 of COL4A1. This mutation predicts truncation of the protein with disruption of the C-terminal part of the NC1 domain. We confirmed its presence in 20 family members, 17 with confirmed haematuria, 5 of whom also had stage 4 or 5 chronic kidney disease. Eleven family members exhibited kidney cysts (55% of those with the mutation), but muscle cramps or cerebral aneurysms were not observed and serum creatine kinase was normal in all individuals tested. CONCLUSIONS: Missense mutations of COL4A1 that encode the CB3 [IV] segment of the triple helical domain (exons 24 and 25) are associated with HANAC syndrome (hereditary angiopathy, nephropathy, aneurysms and cramps). Missense mutations of COL4A1 that disrupt the NC1 domain are associated with antenatal cerebral haemorrhage and porencephaly, but not kidney disease. Our findings extend the spectrum of COL4A1 mutations linked with renal disease and demonstrate that the highly conserved C-terminal part of the NC1 domain of the α1 chain of type IV collagen is important in the integrity of glomerular basement membrane in humans

    Tocilizumab Prevents Progression of Early Systemic Sclerosis Associated Interstitial Lung Disease

    OBJECTIVE: Tocilizumab has demonstrated lung function preservation in two randomized controlled trials in early systemic sclerosis (SSc). This effect has yet to be characterized in terms of quantitative radiographic lung involvement. In this post-hoc analysis, we assess tocilizumab's impact on lung function preservation, stratifying treatment arms by the degree of radiographic lung involvement. METHODS: The focuSSced trial was a phase 3, randomized placebo-controlled trial of tocilizumab in patients with SSc and progressive skin disease. Participants had baseline and serial spirometry along with high resolution chest CT at baseline and week 48. Quantitative interstitial lung disease and fibrosis were derived using computer software. We divided quantitative interstitial lung disease in mild (5-10%), moderate (>10-20%), or severe (>20%) categories. RESULTS: Of 210 participants recruited in the trial, 136 [65%] had interstitial lung disease. The majority of these participants had moderate-to-severe involvement defined by >10% lung involvement (77%). The tocilizumab arm demonstrated preservation of forced vital capacity over 48 weeks (least squared mean change in %predicted = -0.1) compared to placebo (-6.3%). For mild, moderate, and severe QILD, the mean decline in the %pFVC in the tocilizumab arm at 48 weeks were -4.1, 0.7, and 2.1, and in the placebo group were -10.0, -5.7, and -6.7, respectively. Similar treatment-related preservation findings were seen independent of fibrosis severity. CONCLUSION: Tocilizumab in early SSc- associated interstitial lung disease with progressive skin disease stabilized forced vital capacity over 48 weeks, independent of the extent of quantitative radiographic interstitial lung disease or fibrosis

    Rapid identification of the medicinal plant Taraxacum formosanum and distinguishing of this plant from its adulterants by ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) based DNA barcode

    Original identification of medicinal plants is essential for quality control. In this study, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) nuclear ribosomal DNA served as a DNA barcode and was amplified by allele-specific PCR. This approach was exploited to differentiate Taraxacum formosanum from five related adulterants. Using a set of designed PCR primers, a highly specific 223 bp PCR product of T. formosanum was successfully amplified by PCR. However, no similar DNA fragment was amplified from any of the other adulterants. This indicates that, our allele specific primers have high specificity and can accurately discriminate T. formosanum from its adulterant plants.Key words: Medicinal plant, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), authentication, Taraxacum formosanum, traditional Chinese medicinal, internal transcribed spacers 2 (ITS2)
